ARC of Moore County - BBQ Cook Off
A barbecue cook-off to benefit The Arc of Moore County and its family support project, First in Families of the Sandhills, will kick off the Carthage Buggy Festival on Friday, May 9.  The event will start with a concert, featuring the McKenzie Brothers, in the theater at Nancy Kiser Park beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The public is invited to come out and enjoy the music in the outdoor theater and be on hand as the cookers arrive and set up their booths.  The Buggy Festival Cook-Off is officially sanctioned by the North Carolina Pork Council.

There is a lot to look at for folks who come out early.  Members of the Classic Hot Rod Association will display some interesting vehicles at the park and the Carthage Museum that evening.  The cooker teams also go all out with the decoration of their booths for the Showmanship Competition judged by local notables.  The public will have an opportunity to vote on their choice for favorite booth, with the winner awarded a "People's Choice" trophy.

The Carthage Fire Department will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs and Two Scoops will be selling ice cream.

Delivery of the pigs to each contestant will take place at about 10:00 p.m.  They cook all night and the following morning on-site judging by N.C. Pork Council certified judges begins at 8:00 a.m.  Following the on-site judging, local barbecue enthusiasts will put their palates to a blind taste test of all contestants' barbecue.  On-site and blind scores will then be combined to determine the first, second, third and fourth place winners.

The public is invited to come out to the park between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning and taste free samples of each cooker's pig and sauce.  This will be the only chance to taste differences between cookers.  Once the judging is complete the cooked and chopped barbecue will be combined and sold as sandwiches and in bulk at The Arc/First in Families Barbecue Cook Off booth on the courthouse square.

The cook-off is a benefit for The Arc and its family support program.  The Arc of Moore County is a non-profit United Way organization providing services and support to children and adults with mental and other developmental disabilities, and their families.
